Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative talents in her early years, thanks to Aunt Denise. The aunt worked as an overnight nursing assistant in order to give her an opportunity to study literature or theater. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered through experience the art of being a good instrument for activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, who had a social conscience and pushed DuVernay to show her creativity through art. While DuVernay was raised within Compton with her parents, she spent every summer in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring city of Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, inspired her later to direct a movie about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing television news at the age of a student. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the monitor and investigate the residence for a specific member of the Jury. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism so she decided to shift her focus towards the field of publicity. DuVernay was hired straight out of college as an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999.
